Mission Statement

The purpose of the Dewan Bahasa Pustaka Library is to provide without charge, diverse and easily accessible materials, services and programmes to educate, inform, enrich and entertain all residents of the country. The Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Library provides equal access to all users, and seeks to make available the broadest possible spectrum of information and ideas.

Providing services to all age groups is one of the function of the Library, services are provided to meet the special needs and interests of each group. The Library recognizes its responsibility to contribute to the lifetime learning of adults in the community, and to reach out to those with special needs by committing funding for special collections and services to promote literacy, and to provide materials for the visually handicapped of all ages, such as large print books for the children. The Library strives to satisfy the mental, emotional, and recreational needs of children and youth through material and programs relevant to their interests. The Library works closely with other government departments and co-operate with the school librarians and teachers.

Location

The DBP Public Library is located at the centre of the capital Bandar Seri Begawan, precisely at Jalan Elizabeth II, Bandar Seri Begawan BS3510, facing the garden in front of the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque. The Library Building is just next to RTB (Radio Television Brunei) Building. Further down the road there is the old building of the Ministry of the Religious Affairs.

If you go along Jalan Tutong towards the commercial area of the capital, you will pass the Secretariat Building on your right hand side and the Main Post Office on your left, turn right at the traffic lights and you are on Jalan Elizabeth II. You will pass the front side of the Secretariat Building and then the RTB Building. If you use Jalan Stoney towards the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, turn left at the traffic lights as you pass the Dewan Raya of RTB Building and the first building on your left is the DBP Library.

Daily Library Hours

The main library is open:

Monday - Saturday : 0800 to 2000 hours
Sunday : 0900 to 2000 hours
And closed on Friday and Public Holidays

And one Branch Library in Seria (in Belait District) located at Jalan Bolkiah, Seria;

The opening hours for districts and branch libraries are as follows:

Monday - Saturday : 0900 to 1700 hours
Friday and Sunday : Closed for the whole day.

The Library Collection

The library has a growing collection of monographs and other library materials and currently there are more than 385,000 volumes of books within the whole system. Various Catalogue cabinets make it possible for the public to search the library's collection. The collection is divided into five main categories: Reference Library, Adult Library, Young People's Library, Childrens Library and Mobile Library. Each category contains materials appropriate to its readers.

    • Reference Section

      The Reference Section consist of four main collections namely the Bruneiana Collections, Southeast Asia/ASEAN Collections, the General Collections and the Multimedia Collections.

      The Bruneiana Collections is a collection of publications either published in or about Brunei with emphasis on culture, history, politics, economics, social customs, ethnology and other subject areas.

       

    • Adult

      Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Reference can be found here. Fiction consists of: Romance, Historical, Mysteries, Westerns, Large-Print, Science Fiction, and a extensive selection of paperbacks. Non-fiction has a wide variety of materials on subjects ranging from agriculture to zebra and anything in between.. An Internet access computer is available for use in 1/2 hour blocks of time, check with the Circulation Desk for more information about this service.

       

    • Young People

      The youth collection is primarily for readers between the age of age 13 to 21, although there are enough reading areas for the youth at the upper level, one can find information appropriate for their respective levels. Youth Library is divided into Fiction, Non-Fiction, Reference, Paperback browsing areas and the Text and Educational books. Soon the Young People Library will be provided with CD-ROM workstation to assist with homework assignments.

       

    • Children's

      The Children's Room is a fun place for children and their care takers to visit. The collection is arranged into reading, reference, study areas and activities rooms. Children's picture books, Parenting Collection, Easy-to-Read books, puzzles, audio tapes, kits and videos are all located in a relaxed atmosphere. Fiction and picture books are located in a sunny corner for quiet reading. The Non-Fiction and Reference arrangement makes it easy for library users to study. A CD-ROM workstation is also available for homework assistance, and learning fun.

       

    • Magazines

      The library subscribes to more than 200 titles of magazines and journals. Magazines are located in the General Reference area in second floor. Most recent issues will be displayed at the magazine shelf and the back issued are kept at the stack room.

    • Facilities

      Library Gallery, Exhibition Hall, Theatre and Seminar/Conference Room

      The above areas and spaces may be reserved for various purposes, activities and programmes of a non-profit nature. For more information about the room and its use policy, contact the library 02-235501.


Mobile Library Services

Mobile Library Services provides access to DBP Library materials for residents who cannot reach their libraries because of the distance, the detention, school's hours and other reasons. Library staff members use bookmobiles to visit various locations in off-the-main library service areas, i.e. providing services to school children, inmates of Jerudong Prison and to Al-Islah in Muara Town.

The first service point was in Sekolah Rendah Saba Darat in Brunei Muara District.

Mobile Library Services is provided by five mobile library vans.

    • Serving Brunei's Children.

    • Serving Brunei's Disabled/Housebound Residents

      - Bookmobiles visit facilities and residences for developmentally disabled and physically handicapped citizens which is situated at Pulaie.
